Location: 4415 Beryl Road, Raleigh, NC 27606 Capacity: About 500 guests (Great Lawn, estimate) Type: Botanical Garden / Arboretum Website: jcra.ncsu.edu
The JC Raulston Arboretum is a working research garden at NC State University, planted in 1976 and grown since to 10.5 acres of separately designed rooms, each built around a different idea about what a garden can be. It is open to the public every day, free of charge, and it also rents its gardens and one indoor auditorium for weddings, on terms the university sets.
That distinction matters for how the day feels. Most of these gardens were not built for events. The White Garden, the Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden, and a dozen more are tended as horticultural collections first, and a wedding gets to happen inside one of them for an afternoon.
The Classic Gardens
The Annabelle Lundy Fetterman White Garden is a southern take on an English garden, built around a Victorian gazebo, and the arboretum calls it a top destination for weddings. It holds 90 to 100 guests. A short walk away, the Finley-Nottingham Rose Garden holds 200, peaking twice a year, in mid-May and again in September, when the garden is at its fullest color.
The Grand Event Lawns
The Great Lawn and the Gathering Lawn are the arboretum's largest rental spaces, built for outdoor wedding receptions at real scale, with the Gathering Lawn holding an estimated 400. They are also the only gardens the arboretum allows an outside company to tent, and the only ones with dedicated gates, through the Horticultural Field Lab or Beryl Road gates, which take catering trucks and vendor load-in. With an approved lighting plan, they are the arboretum's one option for a rental that runs past sunset.
The Intimate Gardens
A cluster of smaller settings suits a ceremony or a cocktail hour: the Japanese Garden, a Zen space of raked gravel and hand-built wooden and stone features, seats 10 to 12 and stands 15 to 20; the A. E. Finley Rooftop Garden seats about 60 for a ceremony and stands about 100 for a reception; the Boxwood Garden and the Glade each hold about 100; Asian Valley holds about 70.
The York Auditorium
For an indoor reception, the York Auditorium sits in the Ruby C. McSwain Education Center. It is three rooms, numbered 105, 107 and 109, that combine into one space or split apart for a smaller gathering: the full room holds an estimated 120, each individual room about 30. Booked whole, it comes with access to the South Terrace outside and a catering staging kitchen, so a couple can move a reception between indoor and outdoor air without losing the flow of the evening.
What We Design Here
A garden this specific asks a florist to follow its lead. In the White Garden, where the palette is already pale and structured around the gazebo, we build toward monochrome, ivory and green with weight kept low so the gazebo keeps the eye. In the Japanese Garden, the gravel and stone ask for restraint, and one well-placed piece says plenty. On the lawns, where the sky and the tree line do most of the visual work, arrangements read best at human height, dense enough to matter from a seated table and simple enough to let the view carry on past them. Indoors in the auditorium, we build low and let the garden stay visible through the windows.
Practical
The arboretum sits on Beryl Road, a few minutes off Hillsborough Street and I-440, on NC State's campus on the west side of Raleigh. Outdoor garden rentals run sunrise to sunset, seven days a week, except on the Grand Event Lawns with an approved lighting plan; the York Auditorium can be booked from 7 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week. All caterers must be approved by the arboretum in advance, and alcohol service is limited to two hours with a professional bartender and prior sign-off from the arboretum's director. Because the grounds are a living plant collection, open flames, confetti, glitter and anything that scatters are not permitted on site. The arboretum's own rental team handles scheduling, pricing and the required approval forms directly.
