Historic Market Hall

Location: 214 E. Martin Street, Raleigh, NC 27601 Capacity: Up to 400 guests (reception); 300 seated Type: Historic Event Venue Website: historicmarkethall.com

Historic Market Hall occupies a building constructed in 1914 in the Spanish Mission style, designed by architect James Matthew Kennedy for contractor Jesse G. Adams, and built as Raleigh's farmers' market, where neighbors from every part of the city came to buy and sell. Vendors sold produce, seafood, and baked goods here for over 40 years before the market closed in 1957. The building then spent decades as a furniture store, and in 1989 it became home to Greenshields Brewery, North Carolina's second brewery, and one of the first 50 craft breweries in the country. In 2009 the space was reimagined as an event venue, and further renovation and expansion between 2015 and 2018 gave it its current name and its current form: 2 large rooms, a covered patio, and 2 private suites, set on the cobblestone streets of City Market in downtown Raleigh's Moore Square District.

The building keeps its bones. Brick walls and exposed beams run through both suites, a stone fireplace anchors one of them, and floor-to-ceiling windows bring in daylight on both levels. At night, market lighting overhead replaces daylight with a warmer, closer kind of light. Guests arrive by parking downtown and walking the last stretch across cobblestones, past the storefronts of City Market.

Park View and Market View

The two main rooms, Park View and Market View, are divided by a sliding wall that opens or closes depending on how a couple wants the day to move. Market View holds up to 400 guests for a ceremony and, for a reception, up to 400 standing with a DJ and dance floor or 300 seated. Park View holds up to 200 for a ceremony and up to 220 for cocktail hour. A couple can hold a ceremony in one room, open the wall for cocktails, and reveal the other room already set for dinner, or use both rooms as one continuous space for a single reception.

Blake Street Patio and the Cobblestones

The Blake Street Patio seats up to 80 guests under string lights and gas heaters, sheltered but still outdoors, facing the cobblestone street the district is built around. Couples who want the street itself can reserve it: the venue arranges the permits, clears parked cars, and sets 200 white garden chairs on the stones, turning Blake Street into a ceremony space with the district's own architecture as its backdrop.

The Suites

Two private suites, each about 1,000 square feet, hold up to 20 guests apiece. The Park View Suite has an original stone fireplace, a hair and makeup station, a dining area, a private restroom, and a chef-prepared lunch, under the same floor-to-ceiling windows found downstairs. The Market View Suite adds a foosball table and a TV lounge alongside its own dining space, a private restroom, and wine, beer, and sodas. Both suites sit upstairs, reachable only by stairs, worth knowing ahead of time given the building's age.

What We Design Here

A room this direct, brick and beam and tall glass, reads best with arrangements that have real structure. We look for shapes with a clear top and bottom and vessels in metal, glass or ceramic whose color holds its own against warm brick. The market lighting overhead pulls warm and amber once the sun goes down, so a palette built for daylight should still read well after dark. In a room built for hundreds, a centerpiece needs enough height to register from across the floor, while the patio and any tables near it call for lower, denser work suited to conversation at close range. On the cobblestones, a single freestanding piece where the ceremony centers holds the eye and lets the street frame the rest.

Practical

Historic Market Hall is at 214 E. Martin Street in Raleigh's Moore Square District, in the middle of downtown and a short walk from the Raleigh Marriott City Center, the Sheraton Raleigh, and the Residence Inn by Marriott Downtown Raleigh. Parking is available in several nearby decks and a surface lot within a block or two of the venue, alongside street parking throughout downtown. Catering runs in-house, and weddings require a coordinator from the venue's approved list to finalize floor plans and run the day. The venue's events team handles availability and booking directly.
