Sarah P. Duke Gardens is a 55-acre public garden on Duke University's campus, built around a historic terraced core dedicated in 1939. The garden reads as several distinct landscapes stitched together: the formal Italianate terraces at the center, a native-plant woodland, an Asiatic arboretum, and a newer gateway area near the main entrance where the amphitheater and event hall sit. Five miles of allées, walks, and paths connect them. None of it was built for weddings specifically, but the garden hosts them inside a setting that has been growing for more than 85 years.
The gateway area, closest to the 420 Anderson Street entrance, was renewed through the Garden Gateway project, which opened to the public in April 2026. It touches the indoor event hall and its surrounding gardens directly, so a couple planning here should check the latest with the events office.
The Angle Amphitheater
The Angle Amphitheater sits within the gateway gardens beside the Virtue Peace Pond and the Page-Rollins White Garden. Duke Gardens describes it as the setting for "many performances, weddings and other special events," a stepped, open-air space set into the landscape. It sits low against its plantings, so during the ceremony guests look straight into the garden.
The Terrace Gardens
The Terrace Gardens are the oldest part of the property, dedicated in 1939 to a design by the landscape architect Ellen Biddle Shipman. The seeds of the whole garden were planted here more than 85 years ago, and the terraces still carry that period's formality: stone stairs, clipped hedges, and descending levels that give a ceremony a built architecture to stand inside. It is the part of Duke Gardens that feels most like a garden in the old, designed sense of the word.
Kirby Horton Hall
Kirby Horton Hall is the indoor event space inside the Doris Duke Center, at the gateway entrance to the gardens. The Garden Gateway renovation expanded the hall to hold up to 160 people, with a new outdoor patio and a larger catering kitchen, so a reception can move indoors and stay within the garden's grounds.

Duke Gardens already has a palette, a scale, and more than 85 years of established structure, so our work here is about restraint and fit. In the terraces, we build low and dense so the work sits level with the clipped hedges and stonework. In the amphitheater, where the garden itself frames the ceremony, an arrangement can be spare: a marked aisle and a piece at the couple's standing point, so the surrounding beds carry the scene. Indoors in Kirby Horton Hall, the tall windows bring the garden's color inside for most of the day, so we design to answer that light, letting arrangements read as an extension of what is growing just outside the glass.
Practical
Duke Gardens is on Duke University's campus in Durham. The main entrance at 420 Anderson Street is open again, with limited parking in the Gardens lot; the events office can advise on parking for a wedding party and guests.
Duke Gardens keeps a required vendor list for wedding catering: couples choose from five approved caterers, Beau Catering, The Catering Company, Catering Works, HL Catering, and Snap Pea.
