The building began as a bank and it still carries itself like one. The Hill Building was raised between 1935 and 1937 to designs by George Watts Carr of Durham with Shreve, Lamb & Harmon of New York, the firm behind the Empire State Building. Limestone and setback, built at a moment when American architecture believed in permanence and could afford to show it.
You feel that before anyone tells you the history. The proportions are right. The lobby has weight. The elevator doors close with the particular satisfaction of hardware made when things were made to last.
What makes it extraordinary for a wedding is the collision. The Art Deco bones are intact, and threaded through them is a contemporary art museum that runs through the public floors, open around the clock and free of charge. A guest who slips out of your ceremony to find the bar walks past contemporary art all the way there. Very few venues in North Carolina can offer a room with an argument in it.
The Vault
The old bank vault is now a private dining room, and it is the detail every guest remembers. The door is a slab of machined steel, standing open against the wall like a piece of equipment left on display. Inside, the scale is close and the acoustics are extraordinary: voices carry warmly, and every toast sounds rich and close. It seats a small party, which is exactly its use: a rehearsal dinner, a family lunch the morning after, a handful of people who will still be describing it years later.
The Ballroom
The main event space keeps the building's language: high ceilings, restrained ornament, materials that photograph as well in flat afternoon light as under warm light at ten at night. The room is handsome as built, so we leave the walls bare and let the architecture show.
The Galleries
The art runs through the public floors continuously and is the building's reason for existing. Exhibitions rotate, so ask what is installed for your date. Ask what is installed for your date. It changes the palette, and it changes what a photographer can do with the space.
The Food
Catering comes from Counting House, the hotel's own restaurant, so the food is cooked by people who work in the building every day and know how the rooms behave when they are full. The kitchen is seasonal and North Carolinian, and couples build their menu together with the kitchen.
What We Design Here
This building rewards restraint and punishes clutter. The palette we return to is ivory and bone against deep green, with warm metallics that echo the Deco detailing. Tall, architectural work suits the ceiling heights in the ballroom; low and dense suits the vault's intimacy.
The art is the color in these rooms. We design to sit quietly beside it, with texture, structure and a great deal of white. The west-facing rooms run gold in the late afternoon, and we plan the palette around that golden hour.
Practical
The hotel is on North Corcoran Street in the middle of downtown Durham, walking distance from the Durham Performing Arts Center, the Durham Bulls' ballpark and the American Tobacco Campus. 125 guest rooms and suites are available for wedding blocks, which makes a genuine single-address weekend possible: ceremony, dinner, dancing, and everyone upstairs afterwards.
