Location: 309 West Morgan Street, Durham, NC 27701 Capacity: Up to 1,108 (Fletcher Hall); 125 (Connie Moses Ballroom) Type: Historic Theater Website: carolinatheatre.org
The Carolina Theatre opened on Morgan Street in downtown Durham in 1926 as the Durham Auditorium and was renamed the Carolina Theatre in 1929. It closed for an extensive renovation in the late 1980s and reopened in 1994 with a new cinema wing added to the original building. The main auditorium has been restored to its 1926 Beaux Arts design: plasterwork, a deep proscenium, and the layered balconies of a theater built to hold an audience's attention.
A wedding here can use the building two ways. The auditorium takes a ceremony at full theatrical scale, and a ballroom upstairs handles the reception at a size made for conversation and dancing. Downtown Durham surrounds the building on foot: restaurants, hotels, and the rest of the city's cultural district within a short walk of the marquee.
Fletcher Hall
Fletcher Hall is the theater's main auditorium, seating up to 1,108 across the orchestra level, box seats, and two balconies. A couple exchanging vows stands on a proscenium stage in a room built for a full house to see and hear every word, with the tiered balconies rising around them. Restored with care, the room still carries the grandeur of 1926.
The Connie Moses Ballroom
The Connie Moses Ballroom is the reception room, sized for up to 125 guests depending on how the room is set. After a ceremony in Fletcher Hall, the scale changes: this is a room sized for dinner and dancing, and it lets a wedding move from the theater's grand register into something closer and more social for the rest of the night.
Backstage and the Lobbies
Backstage dressing rooms can host up to 54 people getting ready, which gives a wedding party the same private preparation space performers use. The Kirby Lobby, with its concession stand and merchandise counter, is one of the building's everyday gathering spaces and carries the same theater atmosphere into the time before and between events.
What We Design Here
This building has a strong architectural voice already, plasterwork, deep color, gilded detail, and a stage built to be looked at, so the florals are built to stand shoulder to shoulder with it. In Fletcher Hall, scale reads from a real distance: an installation at the altar has to carry all the way to a balcony, so we give it height and mass. We lean toward saturated, warm color in that room, tones that keep their depth under stage lighting.
The Connie Moses Ballroom asks for the opposite instinct. In a room this size, the work comes down to table height: dense, textured centerpieces, low enough for conversation across the table, with candlelight setting the mood. Weight and warmth tie the two rooms together: sturdy materials and a rich palette, so the flowers feel at home in a building that has spent a century being looked at.
