Location: 3001 Cameron Boulevard, Durham, NC 27705 Capacity: Up to 600 guests (reception); 400 seated Type: University Hotel & Golf Club Website: washingtondukeinn.com
The Washington Duke Inn sits on Duke University's campus in Durham, built around the 18-hole golf course that Robert Trent Jones Sr. laid out in 1957 and that his son, Rees Jones, renovated in 1993. The hotel opened in 1988 and takes its name from Washington Duke (1820-1905), the industrialist and philanthropist whose family endowed the university.
The building is designed after an English country estate and sits on 300 acres of pine woods and open ground. The hotel has held the AAA Four Diamond award year after year. A couple can put the ceremony, the reception, the rehearsal dinner and every guest's room on one property and never leave it for the weekend.
Four spaces on the property handle weddings: two ballrooms, an outdoor terrace, and a restaurant with its own private patio.
Presidents Ballroom
The Presidents Ballroom is the room built for the largest wedding on the property. Crystal chandeliers hang from the ceiling, and the room's classical proportions work for a traditional wedding or something with more scale to it. French doors open directly onto the Presidents Terrace, so guests walk straight from an outdoor ceremony into the reception.
Ambassador Ballroom
For a wedding of 160 or fewer seated guests, the Ambassador Ballroom is the other indoor option. It holds up to 300 for a ceremony and 200 for a cocktail reception, and its traditional decor and neutral tones work with any palette a couple brings to it.
Presidents Terrace
The outdoor ceremony space stands under an archway built of Duke stone, the same stone used across the university's own campus buildings, softened by natural foliage. The terrace holds up to 300 for a ceremony, 400 for a cocktail reception, and 280 for a seated dinner, and it sits against the Presidents Ballroom for the reception that follows.
The Vista
Vista Restaurant overlooks the golf course and has its own private patio. The hotel also books it for smaller weddings: up to 75 guests for a ceremony in its main room, 50 in the adjoining Vista Center, 150 for a cocktail reception, and 80 for a seated dinner, a different scale of day from either ballroom.
What We Design Here
The Presidents Ballroom's chandeliers and formal proportions carry their own weight, so the work that suits it stands upright and structured: pieces built on urns and pedestals along the sightlines, in a palette of ivory, champagne, and burgundy that reads warm under the crystal light.
On the Presidents Terrace, the stone arch and the established plantings around it already make the ceremony backdrop. The strongest florals there frame the view: markers along the aisle set to the stone's rhythm, an arrangement at the base of the arch, and everything kept low enough that the golf course stays in sight behind it.
Practical
The inn is 2 miles from downtown Durham, 20 minutes from Raleigh-Durham International Airport, and 15 minutes from Research Triangle Park. Self-parking is complimentary for wedding guests, and the property's 271 guest rooms and suites let a wedding party stay in one place for the weekend. The events team handles site visits and planning directly.
