Windy Hill Farm is a working farm in Cedar Grove, on land that has been farmed continuously since the early 1800s. The family who owns it today bought the 70-acre property in 1977, and the farm is now run by a mother and daughter. Ceremonies and receptions share the property with the rest of the operation.
The farm runs largely on solar power, a 6.48-kilowatt system that supplies about 70 percent of its electricity, and the land carries a permanent conservation easement protecting it as farmland. Weddings here happen on pasture, garden, and farmhouse ground.
The Reception Pavilion
Dinner and dancing at Windy Hill happen in an open-air reception pavilion.
The Ceremony Sites and Farmhouse
Ceremonies take place outdoors, with several spots to choose from; one favorite location sits between the farmhouse and an old tree, with other options among the farm's fields and gardens. A wooden ceremony arbor is available as an add-on for couples who want a built frame for the vows. If the weather turns, the ceremony moves into the event barn, or couples may bring their own tent for the outdoor site instead.
The historic farmhouse holds two dedicated getting-ready suites, open from 10 a.m. until the ceremony begins, for the wedding couple and their attendants and parents.
What We Design Here
Windy Hill's al fresco reception pavilion sets the floral work against open sky and field. Loose, informal shapes in wood, ceramic and woven baskets look right at home in that setting, and warm, low tones hold their color once the light fades.
Outdoors, the ceremony sites already carry their own color and texture: pasture grass, tree cover, open field beyond. Arrangements there work best kept simple, an arbor treatment or aisle markers that add a little structure and let the land lead, sized to be seen from across the field.
Practical
The farm is a short drive from Hillsborough, with quick access to both I-40 and I-85. It is within easy driving distance of Chapel Hill, Durham, and RDU. On-site parking holds up to 75 cars, with attendants directing arrivals. Area lodging is worth confirming with the venue when you book.
