Carolina Trace Country Club sits inside a gated, private community built around Lake Trace in Sanford. The club dates to 1959, and its two 18-hole golf courses, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., were completed in 1979. The membership has owned the club since 1987. The clubhouse in use today, about 30,000 square feet, opened in October 2009, replacing the smaller building the club had used since the early 1970s.
Lake Trace
Outdoor ceremonies take place beside Lake Trace, with the clubhouse and its grounds behind the couple. The water is the fixed point of the site: the lawns around it are used for vows, and the clubhouse behind them absorbs the reception once the light changes.
The Clubhouse
Indoors, the club's culinary and service staff run the reception, offering meals the club describes as ranging from casual to fine dining. The clubhouse also holds three of the club's regular dining venues: Hearthstone Restaurant, the fine-dining room with views; Jones Pub, with a full dinner menu; and the poolside Marathon Bar, though which of these a wedding uses depends on the size and shape of the event a couple books. The building's scale, and its position between the golf courses and the lake, is what lets a wedding move indoors without losing the setting that brought the couple there in the first place.
What We Design Here
A private club like this one suits clean lines and restrained color, with enough structure that arrangements hold their shape by the water and again under the clubhouse lights. Near the lake we keep designs low so the view stays the focus, with a simple frame at the aisle and compact pieces on the tables. Indoors, the ceilings and the room's more traditional finishes support taller, denser centerpieces and a warmer palette that reads well once the sun is down. A lakeside ceremony and a clubhouse reception bring two kinds of light to one day, and we build the florals to look their best in each.
