Cates Farm at Cane Creek sits on land the Cates family has held since the 1750s, a working property outside Hillsborough where row crops still grow in the fields around the event spaces. The venue's center is a big red dairy barn: a working farm building put to a second use.
The barn was built in the 1940s at the suggestion of family members who thought a new barn would help the operation, and for decades it stood as a plain silver building doing plain farm work. A later generation began restoring it in the 1990s and finished it around 2010, turning it from a run-down silver barn into the red one that stands today. That history is why the barn looks the way it does: the wood and the proportions still belong to a farm building.
The farm rents by the weekend: the property opens at 3 p.m. on Friday and at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, which gives a wedding party the barn and grounds for the whole weekend, so the rehearsal, the wedding and the next morning's goodbyes all happen on the same land.
The Barn
The barn holds the ceremony and reception, with room for up to 150 guests. Its walls and beams still carry the marks of decades of farm work. If the weather turns, there is covered space for the ceremony. A covered pavilion and a lighted patio extend the usable space outdoors, giving a reception room to spill out onto a porch or a dance floor under the lights as the evening goes on.
Getting Ready
Two separate spaces handle preparation: a bridal suite with large windows and natural light for the bride and her party, and a groom's cabin with a more rustic, cabin-like feel for the groom and groomsmen. With both, each side of the wedding party dresses in its own space on the same property, and the two groups first meet at the ceremony.
The Grounds
The working fields around the barn make the backdrop, with crop rows that shift with the season and field margins left to grow as they please. The farm is roughly 15 minutes from Hillsborough, Carrboro, Chapel Hill, and Mebane, and about 45 minutes from Raleigh, close enough to the Triangle's cities to be an easy drive and far enough out to feel like the country.
What We Design Here
A working farm with a red barn suits florals with some weight to them and an easy, loose shape. Warm, saturated tones sit naturally against the barn's red siding, while paler, softer palettes set against that red look deliberate and fresh. Because the ground is uneven and the light falls straight from open sky, low, gathered arrangements on farm tables hold up best outdoors, and anything built for the barn needs enough scale to register under its high roofline. The bridal suite's daylight and the groom's cabin's closer, warmer light each get their own treatment of the same palette.
Practical
Cates Farm at Cane Creek is in rural Orange County outside Hillsborough. The venue allows outside caterers and any vendors a couple chooses, and permits beer and wine service through a licensed, insured bartender. Parking is on site.
