Union Hall stands in Raleigh's Warehouse District, on the ground the city's original train depot once occupied, active from the 1890s through the 1940s. The hall's history runs back to 1840, and the building now belongs to the City of Raleigh, run day to day by York Properties. What survives from its working life is legible everywhere: exposed beams.
A wedding booking comes with the Grand Hall and the Terrace together, 12 hours of access, and on-site security, janitorial staff, and a venue manager built into the rental; the building is ADA accessible throughout. Rocky Top Catering holds the kitchen for every event here, and bar service runs through Rocky Top Catering or On My Way Bartending; catering, planning, and rentals come from the venue's required vendor list.
The Grand Hall
The Grand Hall is the building's original volume: 40-foot ceilings under exposed industrial beams, and a dramatic window wall. There is no fixed floor plan; the room is reset for each event, so a ceremony, a seated dinner, and a dance floor can share the same footprint in one evening.
The Terrace
The Terrace is wired with built-in lighting and multiple power sources and with plantings that change with the season, open to views over downtown Raleigh. It gives the evening an hour in the open air with the skyline behind it.
What We Design Here
The Grand Hall's window wall means the light in that room moves hard across a single evening, flat and bright through the afternoon, then warming fast. We design for the light as it changes through the evening: pieces that stay clear in the bright early hours and keep their color as the room warms.
The ceiling height and the exposed beams call for scale and structure, pieces built to be seen from across the room. On the Terrace the same logic runs outdoors: forms have to hold their shape against wind and evening heat, and against a skyline that already fills the background.
Practical
Nearby paid parking is available at the Dillon parking deck, across the street. A third space, the Overlook, sits on the building's third floor with its own natural light and a quieter register. It is used for private dinners and for getting ready, and is not part of the standard wedding rental. Area lodging is worth confirming with the venue when you book, and its events team handles availability and floor plans directly.
