The Historic Wakefield Barn

Location: 12617 Old Falls of Neuse Road, Wake Forest, NC 27587 Capacity: Up to 350 guests (standing); 300 seated Type: Historic Barn Venue Website: historicwakefieldbarn.com

The barn went up in 1934, part of the 2,000-acre Wakefield Farm that John Sprunt Hill put together north of Raleigh for Guernsey dairy cattle. The dairy herd was gone by 1952, and the property spent decades in other hands before becoming an equestrian facility in 2000.

Horses are still kept in the paddocks, and the building wears its agricultural framing openly, with the structure of a working barn still visible under the finish.

The Great Hall

Upstairs in the main barn, the Great Hall spans 6,200 square feet under a 34-foot ceiling, lit by 12 chandeliers against off-white paneling and the barn's original pine floors. The room is climate controlled, wired for WiFi and a DJ, and comes with its own tables and chairs. It was a hay loft before the renovation, and the scale still reads that way: one open volume, tall enough for a ceremony, a dinner, and a dance floor to share it across a single evening.

The Stables

Below the Great Hall, the Stables keep the barn's original floors, doors, and ceilings, along with the visible lines of the horse stalls that once stood there. Two marble bars stand at the head of the room, one on each side. A set of double doors opens directly into the venue's kitchen. Couples use it for cocktail hours, for a pre-ceremony gathering, or for the crowd that lingers once the reception has moved elsewhere.

The Grounds

The property runs to more than 14 acres, with 11.5 of them paddocks for the horses kept on-site. A patio just under 3,500 square feet sits off the barn, a former riding ring renovated in 2017 into an outdoor space for ceremonies, cocktail hours, and evening lounging, furnished with the venue's own outdoor seating and cocktail tables.

What We Design Here

The Great Hall's ceiling height and the Stables' low, close proportions ask for two different kinds of work in the same building. Upstairs, scale carries: tall pieces read across the full room and catch the chandelier light against the off-white paneling. Downstairs, we work in weight and texture, work low enough to sit beside a marble bar top and dense enough to register in a room with less light overhead.

Outdoors, the paddocks and open sky carry the setting, so structure stays simple: an arch or an arrangement that frames the aisle and leaves the open sky behind it as the view. We build the outdoor palette to travel indoors too, so a ceremony on the patio and a reception in the Great Hall read as one day.

Practical

The Historic Wakefield Barn sits in Wake Forest, on the north side of the Raleigh area. Two entrances serve the property: the main drive at the front, and a second entrance nearby for vendors, accessible parking, and access to the Mare House, the separate barn used as the bridal suite. Parking includes both covered and open spaces across 106 total spots. Hotels in Wake Forest and North Raleigh run 5 to 20 minutes away, and the venue's own team handles scheduling and availability directly.
