Haywood Hall is a Federal-style house in downtown Raleigh's Historic District, a few blocks from Union Square, built in 1799 for John Haywood, who served as the state's treasurer for 40 years. The North Carolina Society of the Colonial Dames of America has owned the house since 1977 and runs it today as both a house museum and a private event venue, with weddings drawing most of the interest.
The property gives a couple the whole grounds for a full day. Ceremonies take place on the front lawn facing the house, along a paved path, with a gazebo available and room for up to 175 guests. Cocktail hour moves guests into the gardens under the oak trees while the wedding party photographs around the house and the surrounding streets. The reception then goes one of 3 ways: a cocktail-style spread through the garden, a seated dinner under a required tent on the garden patio, or, if the weather turns, a move indoors.
The Gardens
The gardens wrap the house on multiple sides and carry the oaks that give the property its shade and its scale. They are built for movement: a strolling cocktail hour, a ceremony aisle, a tented dinner, a dance floor, each drawn from the same plot of ground at a different hour of the evening. Outdoor power is run to the patio, and guest restrooms are set up outside, so the whole reception can stay in the garden.
The House
The house itself is the backdrop for the ceremony and the portraits. Two dressing suites sit on the second floor, the bridal suite and a second suite for the groom's party, each with a private bathroom and 4 hours of access before the ceremony; the bridal suite opens onto a covered porch. The front porch and facade are the fixed point every other part of the day is arranged around, whether the couple is standing on the lawn facing it or the guests are seated beneath a tent looking back toward it.
The Day
A rental runs 12 hours and covers both the house and the gardens, with a venue host on-site throughout. The rental includes a 1-hour daytime photography session and a 1-hour rehearsal, which the venue schedules no later than 30 days before the wedding. Couples choose their own caterer and vendors, subject to venue approval, and are required to work with a venue-approved planner or a professional day-of coordinator. Only one wedding is booked per day.
What We Design Here
This is a garden wedding with a Federal house standing behind it, so every piece has to hold its own among living green and open daylight. We build toward soft, layered color that feels grown from the garden itself: warm neutrals and dusty tones that sit easily against white clapboard and the green canopy overhead. Scale matters on an open lawn. An arrangement has to carry across the grass or a tented patio, so we build taller and looser and let the trees stand in for a ceiling. Under the tent, with the garden showing through the sides, we dress the tables so they feel rooted in the lawn they stand on.

Haywood Hall sits in downtown Raleigh. Free public parking is available directly across the street in Public Lot 20 (227 E Edenton St.) on evenings and weekends. 3 hotels on Fayetteville Street, the Sheraton Raleigh, the Residence Inn by Marriott Downtown Raleigh, and the Raleigh Marriott City Center, are a 10-minute walk away.
