Flower Delivery in Southern Village
Flower delivery in Southern Village means working with a neighborhood that has its own rhythm and character.
Southern Village is a 312-acre mixed-use community on the southern edge of Chapel Hill, just off US 15-501. It was developed beginning in 1994 by D.R. Bryan and real estate broker Jim Earnhardt, who drew their inspiration from the New Urbanism movement championed by architects Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk. Bryan traveled to Pienza, Italy, to study the principles of neotraditional town design before returning to Chapel Hill and building what became one of the most recognized planned communities in the Southeast. The development has been featured in TIME, Better Homes & Gardens, and Builder magazines as a model of smart growth, and the community it created, roughly 550 single-family homes, 375 townhomes and condominiums, 250 apartments, and 350,000 square feet of retail and office space, functions less like a subdivision and more like a small town that happens to exist within the boundaries of a larger one.
We deliver flowers throughout Southern Village: to homes along the residential streets, to businesses on Market Street, to the offices above the shops, and to the restaurants and event spaces that host private gatherings. Every arrangement is made by hand with seasonal flowers from our studio. For a wedding in the country, The Barn at Valhalla sits on 30 acres outside Chapel Hill, with a barn, a lake and open pasture.
Southern Village, The Design and What It Means for Daily Life
Southern Village was designed so that residents could walk to a grocery store, a movie theater, a restaurant, and an elementary school without getting in a car. The homes sit close to the street with front porches that face the sidewalk, garages are accessed through rear alleys, and the architecture, Craftsman bungalows, French country designs, traditional frame homes, draws on the patterns of 1920s neighborhoods rather than the cul-de-sac subdivisions that dominated American homebuilding in the decades before it was built. The result is a streetscape with a human scale: narrow roads, street trees, and a visual rhythm that encourages people to walk, stop, and talk to each other.
Market Street is the commercial and social center of the community. Weaver Street Market, the organic co-op grocery that also has locations in Carrboro and Hillsborough, anchors the retail with a store that functions as a daily gathering point. The Lumina Theater shows first-run films in an intimate setting. Restaurants, coffee shops, and small businesses occupy the ground floors of mixed-use buildings, with apartments and offices above. On summer evenings, the village green hosts outdoor movies and concerts that draw residents from across the community and beyond, the kind of events where someone might send flowers to the host or pick up an arrangement on the way.
The Homes and the Greenway
The residential sections of Southern Village include single-family homes on compact lots, townhomes, and condominium buildings, and the pricing covers a broader range than the community’s upscale reputation might suggest. The single-family homes have the front porches, the detailing, and the proportions of an older neighborhood, but the floor plans are contemporary: open kitchens, first-floor primary suites in some of the newer models, and an efficiency of space that reflects the community’s walkable design philosophy. The interiors tend toward warm finishes, natural light, and rooms that connect to each other in ways that make a well-placed floral arrangement visible from multiple angles.
The Morgan Creek Greenway runs along the southern edge of the community, with more than a mile of paved paths, boardwalks, and bridges that connect Southern Village to the broader Chapel Hill trail network. The greenway, the village green, and the network of sidewalks give the community an outdoor character that influences the kind of flowers people order: garden-style arrangements, loose and natural compositions, seasonal pieces that feel like they were gathered rather than constructed.
Schools and Location
Mary Scroggs Elementary School sits within Southern Village itself, and Culbreth Middle School and Carrboro High School are both within walkable or short-drive distance. The community’s location on US 15-501 provides direct access to both downtown Chapel Hill and the commercial corridor that connects to I-40 and the broader Triangle. A 450-space Park and Ride lot within the community connects to transit routes that serve UNC and downtown, which is part of why Southern Village has attracted faculty, medical professionals, and graduate students who want a real neighborhood close to campus without living in a college apartment complex.
