Hope Valley is the oldest country club community in Durham and one of the most historically significant residential neighborhoods in the Triangle. Founded in 1925 by Jesse Mebane of Greensboro and Walter Sharpe of Burlington through their firm Mebane and Sharpe, Inc., the neighborhood was built around a golf course designed by Donald Ross, the Scottish-born architect whose courses at Pinehurst and across the Eastern seaboard defined a generation of American golf. The course opened in 1926 as a par-70 layout stretching more than 6,700 yards, and the neighborhood that grew up around it attracted Durham’s professional and business class to a setting that combined country living with a short drive to the city center. In 2009, the historic core of Hope Valley was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The National Register designation recognizes 80 contributing buildings constructed between 1927 and 1959, and the architectural styles that dominate, Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival, give the streets a character that no newer development in Durham can replicate. The homes were built with quality materials in proportions that were standard for the era: real plaster walls, hardwood floors throughout, fireplaces in the living room and sometimes the bedrooms, and rooms sized for entertaining rather than display.
The tree canopy in Old Hope Valley is extraordinary. The hardwoods planted when the neighborhood was new have had nearly a century to grow, and the streets are shaded by oaks, maples, and hickories that create a cathedral-like effect in every season. The gardens are similarly established: boxwood hedges, azalea beds, perennial borders that have been tended for generations. Hope Valley Country Club
The country club is the heart of the community. The historic clubhouse, designed by architect Aymar Embury II, has hosted generations of social events, and Byron Nelson won the 1945 Durham Open on the course during his legendary winning streak. Hope Valley Farms and the Broader Area
Hope Valley Farms, the section to the northeast of the historic core, expanded the community with subdivisions like Chownings Place, Eagle Ridge, Greenbriar, Heatherwood, Oakbrook, and Windsor Oaks, each managed under the Hope Valley Farms HOA. These homes are generally newer, built from the 1970s through the 1990s, and offer a more contemporary style at a different price point while sharing the same wooded, established character that defines the broader Hope Valley area. Hope Valley Commons, the commercial center at the intersection of NC-751 and Garrett Road, provides everyday shopping and dining without requiring a drive into central Durham. Garrett Road Park, a 7.6-acre public park with a playground, tennis courts, and picnic shelters, serves as a gathering point for families in the area.
