The Barn at Valhalla

Location: 1040 Duffy's Way, Chapel Hill, NC 27516 Capacity: Up to 149 guests (ceremony); 125 seated (reception) Type: Barn / Lakeside Estate Website: valhallabarn.com

The Barn at Valhalla sits on 30 acres outside Chapel Hill, where a barn, a lake and open pasture share the property. Pine beams and polished mahogany floors run the length of the barn, seven wrought iron and crystal chandeliers hang overhead, and wide decks wrap the building on the outside, strung with market lights for the evening.

A gazebo built out over the water gives the property a second, fully enclosed gathering space, and a lodge adjoining the barn adds fireplaces, a hot tub, and a game room to the weekend. The venue rents by the day or the weekend, and a full-weekend booking hands the grounds to one couple from Friday morning through Sunday, so the barn, the decks, and the water are not shared with another event in between.

The Barn

The room is climate controlled year-round, so the beams and chandeliers read the same in July as they do in January, and tables, chairs, and rolling bars are provided with the rental. A bridal suite is built into the barn for getting ready before the day starts, and the barn itself sleeps up to 16 overnight, keeping part of the wedding party on site through the following morning.

The Lodge and Gazebo

The lodge is the barn's overnight counterpart: a wall of windows and vaulted ceilings, an indoor balcony, two fireplaces, a waterfall wall, a formal sitting room, and a fully equipped game room. A honeymoon suite, and a hot tub, anchor the lodge, and one additional guest room sits alongside it.

Outside, the gazebo is built over the water and fully enclosed and climate controlled, giving couples a rain-proof ceremony option that still looks out over the lake. An adjoining hearth deck, centered on a stone fireplace, extends the gathering space into the open air on either side of it.

What We Design Here

Inside, mahogany floors and iron chandeliers call for arrangements with enough structure to hold their own; out on the decks and by the gazebo, softer pieces sit easily against the grass and water.

Warm wood and dark iron favor deep, saturated color and a fair amount of weight at the reception tables, while the ceremony spaces by the water read best with looser, lower shapes that keep the sightline to the lake open. By dinner, the market lights on the decks turn everything gold, and we build the palette to glow in it.

Practical

The Barn at Valhalla is a short drive from downtown Chapel Hill, with the barn, lodge, and gazebo all on one property. Weekend rentals run Friday at 8 a.m. through Sunday at 12 p.m.; weekday rentals run Monday at 8 a.m. through Wednesday at 12 p.m.; single-day rentals run Thursday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. or Sunday from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. The venue provides tables, chairs, and bars as part of the booking; day-of coordination or full planning can be added.
