The McAlister House was built in 1914 for the Gant family, and its architecture tells the story of an era in transition: the ornamental exuberance of Queen Anne yielding to the symmetry and restraint of Colonial Revival, two impulses meeting in a single structure and producing something that belongs entirely to Greensboro. The Gants kept the home for more than three decades before the McAlister family bought it in 1949, and the family that gave the house its name left a legacy that extended far beyond the property line. Dr. Jean McAlister was a respected Greensboro pediatrician. Her brother Lacy was known for his work supporting the rehabilitation of young men. The house they lived in carries the character of people who believed in service, and that character is something guests feel even if they never learn the history.
Anne Carlson ensured its future by carefully relocating the house to its current home at 507 North Church Street, beside the Fisher Park Historic District, joined to a second historic home. The Leftwich House was built in 1875 by the nurseryman Martin C. Dixon and is one of Greensboro's most notable Gothic Revival–inspired residences. Together the two homes carry more than 150 years of Greensboro history, and a wedding here moves between both of them.
The Houses
The Gant, inside the original McAlister House, is the largest indoor event space, and its bridal staircase is the focal point that gives a ceremony its entrance. The Murphy and the Dixon sit side by side inside the original Leftwich House, more intimate rooms for smaller gatherings and quieter moments of the evening. The Hall connects the two houses, with floor-to-ceiling windows and a classic checkered floor, so the celebration moves from one home to the other without ever stepping outside.
Each house has its own getting-ready suite, one in the McAlister House and one in the Leftwich House, and a private room is available for out-of-town guests or nursing mothers. A prep kitchen lets the couple's chosen caterer prepare and serve the meal on site. With the indoor rooms and the outdoor spaces together, the venue welcomes up to three hundred guests.
The Grounds
The Lawn is the outdoor heart of the property, a setting for wedding ceremonies, al fresco dining and garden gatherings, with the Garden Nook and the Front and Side Lawns giving each part of the evening its own place.
