The Mayton

Location: 301 S Academy St, Cary, NC 27511 Capacity: Up to 150 guests (standing); 120 seated Type: Boutique Hotel Website: themayton.com

Downtown Cary has become the kind of place people drive to on purpose: brick storefronts, a park at the center of it, restaurants that fill up on a Tuesday. The Mayton sits at the south end of Academy Street, a boutique hotel built around the idea that a wedding weekend works better when everyone can walk to it.

Forty-four rooms and suites give much of the wedding party a place to stay on site, and each room is styled differently, a range of 1920s looks running from Classic to Art Deco. The hotel's restaurant, Peck & Plume, sits on the ground floor, and the wedding spaces look straight out over the downtown park.

The Terrace

The Terrace is the signature space: an outdoor deck set 14 feet above street level, 1,500 square feet, looking out over the 8-acre downtown park. It holds 70 guests seated or 150 for a standing reception.

The Park Room

Floor-to-ceiling windows, hardwood floors, and custom chandeliers give the Park Room the feel of a room built to be looked at as much as danced in. On its own it holds 64 seated or 90 for a reception; combined with the adjoining Peck & Plume restaurant, the space opens up to 120 seated or 140 for a reception and flows as one continuous room.

The North Corner

The smallest and most private of the wedding packages, the North Corner pairs a covered outdoor terrace for cocktails with a seated dinner inside the Redbud Room, plus the adjoining Indigo Room. It holds 40 seated or 50 for a reception, the scale for a wedding built for 40 where the couple can speak to every table before dessert arrives.

What We Design Here

The Mayton's rooms are full of detail and close in scale, so guests see the flowers up close, at arm's length. Low, dense arrangements suit the Park Room's chandeliers and hardwood floors; something looser and more textured suits the Terrace, where the park supplies the backdrop and the flowers settle into it. In the North Corner we scale down further still, and a single strong arrangement on a mantel or sideboard suits the room.

Color should follow the building. Warm neutrals and deep, saturated tones hold their own against brick and hardwood. The Terrace changes with the season and the hour, so a late-afternoon wedding and an evening reception in the same space call for arrangements of a different weight.

Practical

The Mayton is at 301 S Academy St in downtown Cary, walkable to the shops, breweries, and restaurants along Academy Street and across from the downtown park. It is reachable from I-40 at Exit 290, and the hotel is a short drive from Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. Complimentary street parking is available around the building, along with a parking deck near the park at 113 Walnut St. Wedding packages carry a 40-guest minimum and include a wedding night suite, subject to availability.
