Location: 695 Mallard Rd, Smithfield, NC 27577 Capacity: Up to 350 guests (reception); 250 seated in the main room Type: Barn / Farm Website: georgettethomasfarm.com
Georgette Thomas Farm sits on 12 open acres of farmland in Smithfield, less than a mile off I-95. The barn is family owned and operated, and purpose-built for events. The owners describe their work as agro-tourism: opening working land to the public for the sake of the celebrations it can hold.
The barn itself runs 5,750 square feet, with a 4,000-square-foot main room at its center and ceilings tall enough to give the space real height. A prep kitchen with stainless tables and a refrigerator sits off the main room for catering staff, and a bridal suite (3 vanities, a sitting area, a private restroom) and a groom's room (a sitting area, a bar cart, a private restroom) sit apart from the guest areas. Guest restrooms are separate again.
Outside, 1,000 square feet of covered patio connects to another 1,500 square feet of lit gathering space, an outdoor stretch that keeps the reception going after the barn doors close. Beyond that, the fields are open for outdoor ceremonies.
Corporate events top out at 200 and smaller gatherings at 40, and couples bring in their own caterer and vendors: couples are free to choose their own caterer and vendors, and hosts may bring their own beer and wine.
The Barn
The main room is the working space of the venue: a wide, open floor under a high roofline, ready to be set up however the day needs. The layout is open, so a couple can set the room for a formal seated dinner, put a dance floor at the center, or choose anything in between. The prep kitchen behind it keeps catering close at hand, and the separate bridal suite and groom's room give a wedding party its own space to prepare away from guests.
The Patio and Fields
The covered patio is the hinge between the barn and the land: shelter for a cocktail hour or a rain-shortened stretch of the evening, with the lit gathering area extending the footprint further into the open air. Past the patio, the 12 acres are unbroken farmland, flat enough for a ceremony aisle to run straight toward a tree line and open enough that the sky sets the scale of the photographs.
What We Design Here
A room this size and this open asks for work with real weight and height. Inside the barn, tall structures on risers or stands read clearly across a 4,000-square-foot floor and fill the height of the room, while lower, denser arrangements on individual tables keep the room warm at eye level. The barn's plain, neutral interior takes color well: deep, saturated tones read as richly here as pale, quiet ones, and either can be paired with natural, unfinished materials, wood, metal, woven texture, without fighting the structure.
Outside, the approach is simpler. The farmland is the backdrop, so an arch or an arbor for the ceremony needs only enough material to mark the spot where you stand. Late in the day the light runs low and gold across the open fields, and we set the palette to that light.
