Anniversary Flowers by Year: A Florist’s Guide to Every Milestone

Some anniversaries announce themselves. The twenty-fifth arrives with dinner reservations made weeks ahead; the fiftieth gathers children and grandchildren in one room. But most of them arrive quietly: a Tuesday, a shared glance at the calendar, the small astonishment of another year built together. Flowers exist for exactly this kind of moment. They say what a card struggles to: that you noticed, that you remember, that it still matters.

There is a tradition that assigns a flower to each anniversary year. You don’t have to follow it, at our studio we design around what’s freshest and most beautiful the week you order, but knowing the language adds a layer of meaning that turns a lovely gift into a considered one.

The Early Years: One Through Five

The first anniversary belongs to the carnation, a flower that rewards a second look. A well-grown carnation is ruffled, fragrant, and lasts longer in the vase than nearly anything else you can send. Tradition reads it as young love: bright, resilient, still unfolding.

Year two brings lily of the valley, tiny, rare and in season for only a few weeks each spring. Outside those weeks, a designer will translate its spirit into something delicate and white. Year three is the sunflower, all warmth and loyalty. Year four, hydrangea: abundance, gratitude, the feeling of a garden overflowing. And the fifth is the daisy, honesty and optimism, a marriage that has found its footing and knows it.

If the traditional bloom is out of season, this is where a good florist earns their keep. We routinely build arrangements that carry the meaning of the year through palette and shape, our guide to flower color meanings is a good companion here, because color often speaks louder than variety.

The Milestone Decades

The tenth anniversary is the daffodil: new beginnings, which sounds strange for a decade of marriage until you realize that’s precisely what a strong tenth year feels like. The fifteenth is the first year tradition hands over to the rose, and it does not let go easily after that.

For the twentieth, the aster: a small star-shaped flower symbolizing wisdom and patience, two things every twenty-year marriage has earned. The twenty-fifth, the silver anniversary, belongs to the iris, elegant and architectural, beautiful alongside silvery greenery and white accents. The thirtieth calls for something grand and certain of itself. By then, so is the marriage.

When in Doubt, Choose Roses and Make Them Count

Roses are the anniversary flower in the public imagination, and there’s no reason to fight it, only to do it properly. Two dozen garden-style roses, arranged by hand, give the gesture its full weight. Deep red reads as enduring passion; blush and cream lean romantic and tender; a saturated mix feels celebratory.

For the classic statement, our Tango gathers twenty-four roses into something unapologetically romantic. Crimson takes the red-rose tradition and gives it depth: velvety tones layered with texture and shaped with intent. And Rose Garden is the softer road: lush, unstructured, the way roses look when they’re allowed to be themselves.

The Golden Years

The fiftieth anniversary is gold, and its flowers follow: yellow roses and violets by tradition, though in practice we design these arrangements around warmth: golds, ambers, soft yellows, ivory. These are the pieces we take the most care with in the studio. They stand in a room full of family, on a table set for a story that started before some of the guests were born. They’re a room full of family, a table set for a story that started before some of the guests were born.

If you’re marking a golden anniversary for your own parents or grandparents, consider having the arrangement delivered the morning of the gathering, so it anchors the table all day. Our delivery pages cover timing across Raleigh, Cary, Durham and the wider Triangle, including same-day when you order before the afternoon cutoff.

Make It Personal

Tradition is a starting note, and the rest of the tune is yours. The most memorable anniversary flowers we’ve ever designed ignored the official list entirely: the peonies she carried down the aisle, recreated twenty years later. The colors of the beach where he proposed. An arrangement built around a single stem of the flower that grew outside a first apartment window.

If you have a story like that, tell us, our Designer’s Choice pieces exist precisely for it, and each one is an original, designed once and never repeated. If you’d rather browse, start with the full collection.

However many years you’re celebrating, the flowers should feel the way the marriage does: alive, particular, and impossible to mistake for anyone else’s.

Whenever you’re ready, you can order flowers in Raleigh from our studio, each arrangement made by hand.
