Peonies in Raleigh: Where They Come From and How to Order

Pink peonies and garden roses in a glass vase, arranged at Hidden Door Floral Studio in Raleigh

Our phone rings with the same question all year long: “Do you have peonies?” Most weeks, the answer is yes.

We understand the obsession. Peonies are, pound for pound, the most requested flower we carry. Those full, ruffled blooms open slowly from tight buds, the scent fills a room, and a vase of them looks like it stepped out of a Renaissance painting.

Where Our Peonies Come From

North Carolina farms grow beautiful peonies, and in spring we bring local stems into the studio whenever our growers have them. For the larger part of the year, our peonies travel from growers in Holland, Australia and New Zealand. The Southern Hemisphere farms harvest while our own fields rest, so peonies reach our Raleigh studio across most of the calendar.

Planning an event around peonies? Tell us the date and the colors you love, and we will line up the right growers ahead of time.

Why Peonies Cost More

Each peony plant takes years to mature before it gives its best blooms. The stems are delicate, they travel with care, and demand is high, especially for weddings. One open peony carries the visual weight of three or four stems of most other flowers, so a few go a long way in an arrangement.

How to Order Peonies in Raleigh

Tell us early. Peony supply shifts week to week with the growers. An order placed a few days ahead gives us the best chance of getting exactly what you want.

Stay open on color. Blush and coral are the favorites. White and cream peonies are just as lovely and often easier to find, and a little flexibility on shade usually means a fuller arrangement.

Choose a design built around them. Several arrangements in our collection feature peonies as the lead stem, and with Designer’s Choice you can ask for peonies in a note at checkout.

Caring for Peonies at Home

Keep peonies at room temperature and they will open. Warmth encourages the buds to bloom, and a cool room slows them down when you want them at their fullest for an event the next day. Change the water every other day and give the stems a fresh angled cut. Peonies arrive as tight buds and open into big, soft blooms, and when the petals finally fall, that is part of the show too.
