Dennis Quaintance did it in 2007, and the result is a building that uses thirty-nine percent less energy and thirty-three percent less water than a conventional hotel, and looks nothing like a compromise. The architecture draws from Manhattan loft aesthetics and Greensboro’s own mill heritage: concrete and glass, industrial proportions softened by warmth, twelve-foot ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows that bring the surrounding gardens inside. It is a hotel that makes a statement without making a speech, and for couples who care about the world they are building together, it is a venue that mirrors their values without whispering the word “green” in every sentence.

The Weaver Room
The Proximity’s largest event space accommodates up to two hundred for a reception or one hundred fifty-six for a seated dinner, and it earns every guest it holds. Twelve-foot ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows open the room to views of the Bluebell Garden and two and a half acres of natural habitat: the kind of backdrop that changes with the hour, warm gold in the afternoon and deep blue at dusk. An outdoor terrace extends the space, and on evenings when the weather cooperates, the boundary between inside and outside dissolves into something that feels neither contained nor exposed but simply right.

The Other Rooms
The White Oak Room holds one hundred twenty-five for a reception, ninety-six seated, the size where every guest can see the couple and the couple can see every face. The Revolution Room, at seventy-two seated, is the scale of a dinner party among people who genuinely know each other. The Latham Room is the smallest, forty standing, thirty seated, a space for the welcome drinks the night before, the private moment with the wedding party, the brunch where the couple sits at one long table with the people who stayed.

The restaurant adjacent to the hotel is not an afterthought. Print Works Bistro is a destination in its own right: a French-inspired bistro with locally sourced ingredients, housed in a brick building designed to evoke the shipping-and-receiving structures of the old Proximity Cotton Mill. The kitchen works with couples to build wedding menus that reflect the season, and rehearsal dinners here feel like dining in a neighborhood restaurant you wish existed on your own block. The Proximity’s industrial-modern aesthetic invites floral work that feels intentional rather than ornamental. The concrete and glass demand arrangements with presence: structural greens, bold color, vessels that hold their own against the architecture. Orchids, protea, and architectural foliage feel native here. Garden-style romanticism can work in the Weaver Room if it is loose and generous enough to fill the scale, but tight, precious arrangements get lost against the twelve-foot ceilings and wide windows.
The Bluebell Garden visible through the glass walls is a gift and a challenge, whatever sits on the tables must feel as alive as what grows outside.
