The architects were Luther Lashmit and Charles Barton Keen, and what they produced on fifty-five acres of Piedmont hilltop was not merely a house but a small civilization, a residence so comprehensive in its beauty and so confident in its proportions that it became the second-largest private residence in North Carolina, yielding in scale only to Biltmore itself.
