Harris, who served in the North Carolina legislature during Reconstruction, named the settlement after Oberlin College in Ohio — an institution known for admitting Black students before the Civil War. By 1880, roughly 130 Black households had established themselves here, building homes, churches, and a school on the streets between what is now Wade Avenue and Hillsborough Street.
