Peony season in North Carolina is brief, beautiful, and worth planning for. Every spring, our phone starts ringing with the same question: “Do you have peonies yet?”
We understand the obsession. Peonies are, pound for pound, the most requested flower we carry. There’s something about those impossibly full, ruffled blooms: the way they open slowly over days, the scent that fills an entire room, the fact that they look like they belong in a Renaissance painting. No other flower generates this kind of loyalty.
But peonies play by their own rules. And part of loving them is understanding the wait.
Peony Season North Carolina: When Is Peony Season in North Carolina?
Locally, peony season in North Carolina runs from mid-April through late May, sometimes stretching into early June depending on the weather. That’s a narrow window, roughly six to eight weeks, and it depends entirely on what Mother Nature decides to do with spring temperatures.
The good news is that we can often source peonies slightly outside of local season through domestic farms in cooler climates and international growers. But the peak, when peonies are most abundant, most affordable, and most spectacular, is that golden window in late April and May.

Why They Cost More
Peonies are not cheap, and there’s a real reason for that. Each peony plant takes three to five years to mature enough to produce blooms. The harvest season is short. The blooms are fragile and require careful handling. And demand far outstrips supply, especially in peak wedding season.
When you pay more for peonies, you’re paying for time, scarcity, and beauty that can’t be replicated. One peony stem has the visual impact of three or four stems of most other flowers. A bouquet of twelve peonies in full bloom is one of the most stunning things you’ll ever hold.
How to Get the Most from Peony Season
If you want peonies in an arrangement, here are a few tips:
Order early in the week. We source fresh flowers throughout the week, and peonies go fast. Monday and Tuesday orders have the best shot at getting exactly what you want.
Be flexible on color. Pink peonies are the most popular (blush and coral, specifically), but white and cream peonies are equally beautiful and sometimes easier to source. If you’re open to color, you’re more likely to get what you want.
Don’t refrigerate them. Once you get peonies home, keep them at room temperature if you want them to open. Warmth encourages the buds to bloom. If you want to slow them down, say, for an event the next day, a cool room or refrigerator can hold them back.
Enjoy the whole show. Peonies arrive as tight buds and open over three to five days into those giant, blowsy blooms everyone loves. Then the petals begin to soften and fall. The whole arc is beautiful, don’t think of the falling petals as the end. Think of it as the finale.
