Mother’s Day Flowers: Start with What She Actually Loves
It sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people default to red roses for Mother’s Day without thinking about what their mom actually likes. Does she gravitate toward soft pinks and whites? Go with garden roses, ranunculus, and peonies: if they’re in season, they’ll be at their peak in early May. Is she more of a bold, vibrant-color person? Bright dahlias, sunflowers, and mixed spring arrangements hit differently than the standard pastel fare.
If you genuinely don’t know her favorite flower, that’s fine. A mixed seasonal arrangement from a good florist will always feel personal because it’s made by hand that day, not pulled off a shelf.
Timing Matters More Than You Think
Mother’s Day is the busiest single day of the year for florists. We’re not complaining, we love it, but it does mean that ordering early gives you the best selection. If you wait until Saturday afternoon hoping for same-day Sunday delivery, you may be out of luck.

Consider the Setting
Think about where your mom will put the flowers. A dining room table calls for something different than a kitchen counter or a bedside table. Compact, colorful arrangements work beautifully in smaller spaces. Larger, more dramatic pieces, think tall branches mixed with seasonal blooms, make a statement in an entryway or living room.
And if your mom is the type who says “you didn’t have to do that” while clearly loving every second of it, a smaller arrangement with her favorite flower and a heartfelt card is all you need.

Peonies: If they’re available (peony season in NC typically runs from mid-April through late May), they’re the crown jewel of spring. Lush, fragrant, and romantic. They don’t last forever, but nothing that beautiful does.
Garden roses: Fuller and more textured than standard roses, with that old-world charm. They come in every shade from cream to deep coral and they smell incredible.
Ranunculus, Paper-thin petals layered like a tiny rose’s cooler cousin. Available in spring and perfect for adding texture and movement to an arrangement.
Hydrangeas: Big, lush, and available in blue, pink, green, and white. One stem fills a vase. Three stems fill a room.
Tulips, Classic spring. Clean, simple, elegant. A bunch of tulips in a glass vase says “I see you” without trying too hard.
